The style of language you use in an entry or essay of the Encyclopedia of Law is important. Because the ideas in an Encyclopedia should be expressed in an objective manner, the entries and essays are written in third person. For example, “the purpose of this essay was to…” rather than “I did this essay… “.

In the Encyclopedia, the pronouns ‘I’, ‘you’, and ‘we’ should be replaced by ‘it’, ‘she/he’, and ‘they’

An alternative to using the third person is to rephrase the sentences, for example, “the findings indicate…”
instead of “it was found…”

When writing an entry or essay in the Encyclopedia, also remember to avoid using contractions such as ‘don’t’: you should write ‘do not’, ‘should not’, and ‘has not’ instead of ‘don’t’, ‘shouldn’t’, ‘and hasn’t’. Avoid using slang aswell.
